Lamp it up! - light up your life with recycling.

Hosted by Cultiver stockist Lamp it up! here's another great workshop at Cultiver where you can learn how to turn household waste into a beautiful lamp.

To give you some ideas of what these talented lads can help you create here's some images from the recent Lamp it up! workshops in Melbourne Town:

reformed junk lamp
and another beautiful reformed junk lamp
Lamp it up! will be at Cultiver on Wednesday October 5th.

Here's everything you need to know:

Time: 10:00 - 3:00 (with a lunch break - B.Y.O. or visit one of the lovely local cafes')

What to bring: you're welcome to bring along any items from home you think you could recycle to make your lamp. This is limited only by your imagination but could include wooden bowls, plastic mixing bowls and food containers, napkin rings, door knobs, kids toys, glass lamp shades...

What you'll be doing: The Lamp it up! lads will help you sift through your own collection of materials to find suitable items for a lamp, then you'll all take a stroll around the Top of Town op shops to look for more materials (any items you find must be paid for by yourself). Once back at Cultiver they'll help you design and build your own unique lamp.

Supplied: all lamp components such as cord, fittings etc, tools to build lamps

Cost: $40 per adult, $10 for each accompanied child (aged 8 and up, limit of two children per adult participant), plus you'll need extra cash to purchase any component materials at the local op shops.

We are super excited to be the very first place in Australia to host this out of this world competition started in 2007 by the CRE8 Foundation. This incredible not for profit organisation aims to inspire and unite global youth through art and promote intercultural dialogue through collaborative artistic creation.

This is how Cre8 describes the competition:
"The project is, of course, intentionally absurd. No one has any idea what an alien looks like—certainly not a realistic one, let alone the most realistic one. The idea of the project is to challenge participants to shed preconceived notions and have fun exploring an obvious paradox. By introducing the project in the form of a contest, we rely on competitive spirit to drive each participant further and further into an abstract and artistically fruitful chase to attain the unattainable. As with everything we do at CRE8, we hope to inspire creative thinking and welcome all creative responses".

Cultiver will be hosting and documenting the Australian debut of the competition on Thursday the 22nd of September between 9.30am and 2.00pm. If you'd like your offspring to be part of it and you're happy to have their creative genius filmed and photographed then please drop in to Cultiver next Thursday and get ready to be creative.

You can simply turn up or you could RSVP via the Facebook event)
Cultiver is located at 2/126 Brisbane St. Ipswich. Check the Find Us page above if you're not sure where we are.

Happy 1st Birthday Valley Incube8r

A night out with the family and a lovely evening celebrating the first birthday of The Valley Incube8r. Please excuse the blurry pics I hate using the flash because it washes people out so lets call them artsy action shots.

It was great catching up with Vicki and some crafty market friends I've not seen in ages and it was a wee bit wonderful to meet busy lady Jess of bespoke* (much talller in real life than on her blog).

Ciao for now

Look what we made today!

Today we stuck these adorable vintage characters onto bricks and called them tealights! But seriously, the bricks are salvaged from an old council well so are covered in moss etc. There are only 4 here in the shop...and they're $15 each. Get in quickly, the last slow day project (mini terrariums) disappeared off the shelves within 12 hours of us posting photos! BlogBooster-The most productive way for mobile blogging. Oh, What a Night!

The night finally came and we had massive fun at the Launch Party!

With over 100 people crammed into the shop and spilling out into the street we ate cookies, drank mulled wine and listed to the live band which doubled as our window display for the night!

Rachel Nolan was there to proclaim us officially open and there were so many familiar faces in the crowd cheering us on...it was all a bit overwhelming! So in the quiet time we have a lot of folk to thank...

Rachel Nolan for racing back from the Cape to open us
Andrew Antonelli for his kind words
Ailsa for the cookies and company
Thea for remembering to take photos!
Alex, Jade and Lyle for plying guests with food and drink
Eva and Christian for the pumping tunes
Dorothy for Story Time
The Cubbee House boys for the awesome pasteup on the window
Anna-Maria for the caramel tart
fourthchild for things to drink from
Michelle from Nook and Alarna from Little Jane St for closing early and making the trip to spend some time with us
All our Craftisans for trusting us to sell their beautiful things
The folk who spent their hard earned cash on handmade goodness
and..all the people who gave us gifties in the form of drinkies (I think we love you the most!)

Phew! I'm sure we have forgotten a few so will come back and add to the list but there you go, we really couldn't have had such a successful first month without everyone who supports and is dedicated to making handmade a way of life.

Thanks to Thea White from Little Golden for the two images above.

A wonderful first week.

Well, the first week of business has been amazing! The support from local community and businesses has been awesome and we can't thank everyone enough who has come in and praised all our hard work. It makes us feel so great when people walk through the door and exclaim "what an amazing space!".

We are not even 'officially' open yet, our launch party is on Friday the 29th...here's the invitation...

There are over 30 craftisans with their wares instore already with almost as many still to come...that means even more well designed, modern, handcrafted wares will be on the shelves over the next few weeks.
What more can you expect? Well, to whet your appetite...cushions,bags and hobby horses from UPcycled coffee bags, amazing handcrafted chairs from REcycled wood, handmade stationery, art posters, journals made from vintage storybooks and albums and vintage styled underwear!

But for now, if you can't make it into the shop, here are a few photos from a massive album on facebook to give you a few tastes of what you are missing out on!

These are just a few shots from the inside...so next time you are in Brisbane St, don't just press your face up against the window...come on in and say hi!
